Western National Hires New Chief Underwriting Officer

(Minneapolis, Minn.) Western National Insurance Group (WNIG) of Edina, Minn., today announced that Richard B. Kalina, CIC, has joined the companies as Senior Vice President – Chief Underwriting Officer. In this senior management role, Kalina will lead all personal, commercial and surety lines of business. He will replace retiring EVP David Eide, who will transition from the companies at the end of the first quarter of 2013.

Formerly Senior Vice President-Midwest Region for QBE North America, Intermediary Division, located in Sun Prairie, Wis., Kalina has spent 32 years in various underwriting roles for QBE (formerly known as General Casualty Insurance Companies), working his way up from a field underwriting desk to become the SVP of all of General Casualty’s $790 million of commercial lines premium. Rich’s experience includes commercial and personal lines underwriting, product development, rate management, loss control and premium audit services.

Kalina earned his BA in Mathematics from the University of Minnesota. He has also completed the CIC designation.
