Holiday Light Safety
Winter holidays are a special occasion for families and friends to spend time together. However, if not careful, the winter holidays can be a dangerous time, as well. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), nearly two of every five holiday fires happen because decorations are improperly used.
To have a safe and healthy winter holiday season, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends the following tips to protect you and your home from holiday fires:
Holiday Decorating
- Carefully select winter decorations that are flame resistant, as it will ensure that your decorations do not catch fire.
- Keep lit candles away from all decorations, especially if you have a real Christmas tree.
- Verify that your holiday lights are meant for indoor or outdoor use. Many lights come in both indoor and outdoor styles and it is important to make sure you are using the appropriate kind, depending on the space that you are decorating.
- Discard and replace any worn, broken, or loose light strands. Light strands that are not working properly are a significant fire hazard.
- If your family has a real Christmas tree, be sure to water it daily. A dry tree is incredibly dangerous, as it can easily catch on fire.
- Turn off all string lights and decorations prior to leaving your home or going to bed.
