Western National Mutual: A Minnesota Success Story
(The following article appeared in the Minnesota Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers News Publication.)
For over 100 years Western National has been serving the needs of mutual policyholders in Minnesota. During the last three years under the leadership of Stuart Henderson, President and CEO, Western National has put a new face on its strong company values. During this renewal process, the corporate image has been refurbished, policies and procedures have been revamped and the commitment to the independent agency system has been reaffirmed. Western National only markets products through independent agents.
Financial results have been very strong, with significant net income for the last 3 years, combined ratios under 100, and a doubling of surplus since 2000. Last year for the second time in two consecutive years, AM Best upgraded Western National's rating. Currently, Western National is rated A- (Excellent).
Western National is a strong supporter of the MIIAB and its efforts to promote professional development of member agencies. The various programs offered such as CIC, CISR and E/O seminars help ensure that agents retain a competitive “Knowledge” edge in the marketplace. Western National is currently completing a state of the art training center to be used for employee and partner agent development and skill building sessions. For the first time in many years, Western National is looking to contract with new partners in selected areas. Growth is occurring in all states of operation: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, Washington and Oregon.
Core values are at the heart of the Western National success story. President Stu Henderson states that “Western National continues to be a solid presence in Minnesota, and we look forward to profitable growth with our independent agency partners in 2005. Western National is know as The Relationship CompanySM because we know that is a core value of immeasurable worth to our mutual customers and partner agencies.”
